SHREWSBURY FOOD HUB & SHREWSBURY FOOD BANK PLUS
Shrewsbury Food Hub is a volunteer-powered charity that stops food waste to protect the environment and strengthen our community. We collect surplus food from shops, manufacturers and farms and share it with local groups.
Since April 2016, we have collected good surplus food from supermarkets, manufacturers and farms and shared it with local charities and community groups, saving them money so they can do more. Our community partners support the homeless, the old, the vulnerable and those on low incomes.
We also support community Foodshare Tables and Fridges where everyone is welcome to collect a few bags of food to help stop food waste and stretch household budgets.
Today, 140+ amazing volunteers collect food daily from 30+ suppliers including local supermarkets, manufacturers and farms and share it with 60+ community groups who support the homeless, the old, the vulnerable and those on low incomes.
Foodbank PLUS is the umbrella for the delivery of a range of individual initiatives; Shrewsbury Foodbank, Barnabas Money Advice, 360, Acts 435, Breathe and Foundations, which incorporates a range of services supporting clients on the journey back to work and health.
Historically food banks have been seen as a short term fix but with these initiatives working together it means we can help people to become more resilient for the longer term.
Food banks are an essential service in communities across the country and in the last few years they have helped thousands of people in need. Through food bank PLUS, Shrewsbury Food Bank is now able to help people beyond the short term fix and empower them to help themselves.
We aim to help people out of crisis and poverty whether that’s resources, relational or identity and empower clients to enable them to make confident decisions and responses to future challenges they may face.
Jigsaw Sound Choir Member, Alan Morris, is a volunteer at Barnabas Foodbank Plus and this is what he has to say about his work there:
I love working at Shrewsbury Foodbank - but I am deeply challenged in many ways that it needs to exist. Foodbank PLUS is the combination of a unique range of individual initiatives. By offering this holistic approach, we can deliver a bespoke service for each of our clients. We aim to support people out of crisis and poverty whether that's resources, relational or identity, and empower clients to enable them to make confident decisions and responses to future challenges. We have over 110 regular volunteer colleagues from all parts of the community who support our initiatives.
